The Most Provocative Shoe in Medieval History — Handcrafted in Genuine Leather
Perhaps one of the silliest and most fascinating trends in medieval fashion, the poulaine probably first emerged around 1340 in Krakow, Poland. One of the most distinctive and intriguing shoe styles of the medieval period, the poulaine — also known as the pike or crakow — was a low-cut, flat-soled shoe, sometimes fastened with a side lace or toggle, whose distinctive feature was its very pronounced, pointed toe. The elongated toe was a sort of status symbol — those who wore poulaines made a clear social statement that they had the freedom and luxury to enjoy life and not work. For over a century, from the 1340s through to 1500, the poulaine was the defining footwear of European nobility. Kings wore them. Knights had them modified for battle. The English Crown eventually passed a sumptuary law attempting to limit their length. Noirtide's Poulaine Crakow Medieval Shoe reproduces this extraordinary medieval silhouette in premium genuine leather — the dramatically pointed toe, the open latchet sides, and the simple leather thong tie closure all faithful to documented archaeological examples from Thames foreshore finds and museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of London.

Premium Genuine Leather — Every Detail Grounded in History
Each pair is individually handcrafted from premium full-grain genuine leather in a construction faithful to 14th and 15th century cordwaining methods. The dramatically elongated pointed toe is the defining element — shaped in genuine leather that holds its pointed profile without artificial stuffing, referencing the moderated-length poulaine documented in surviving Thames foreshore examples rather than the most extreme court versions. The open latchet sides — the characteristic open cut between the vamp and quarter that defines this style as clearly as the pointed toe — are finished with a simple leather thong threaded through a sewn loop and tied, replicating the toggle-and-thong closure documented across multiple archaeological poulaine finds. The flat sole can be specified in traditional leather for period accuracy and indoor events, or rubber for outdoor reenactment and festival terrain. Available in Natural Tan — the most historically accurate colourway, reflecting undyed vegetable-tanned leather — Black for theatrical and formal impressions, and Dark Brown for field-worn and character-aged builds.

Fully Bespoke — Any Size, Exact Measurements
Every pair of Noirtide Poulaine Crakow Shoes is made to your exact foot measurements — length, width, and instep all confirmed before a single piece of leather is cut. Non-standard foot shapes, wide fittings, and unusual proportions are all accommodated at no extra charge. After ordering, Noirtide contacts you directly to confirm measurements before production begins.
